Sequence of Tenses

Level 5

Unlike English, Romanian does not automatically shift subordinate verbs into the past when the main verb is in the past. Instead, it uses a 'natural' sequence, keeping the tense of the original thought or statement.

How It Works

No automatic English-style backshift
After a past reporting verb, Romanian can retain a present tense for an event simultaneous with that report: Mi-a spus că este obosit (“He told me he was tired”). The present does not automatically assert that the state still holds now.

Choose the time relationship
The imperfect can situate a state in the past: A declarat că era nevinovat. The pluperfect marks an earlier past event: Nu știam că plecase. Future forms can remain after a past matrix verb: Credeam că va veni (“I thought he would come”). Romanian does not require a conditional merely because English uses “would”.

Meaning, not matching endings
Do not replace every present by a past tense after a spus. Conversely, a past tense is not automatically wrong: A zis că a fost fericită can report happiness during an earlier completed period.

The conditional has its own hypothetical and reportative uses; it is not limited to hypothetical meaning and is not a mandatory backshift form.

Examples (5)

  1. Mi-a spus că este obosit.

He told me that he was tired.

Word by Word: To me has told that is tired.

The present tense (este) is used to show he was tired at the exact moment he spoke (simultaneity).

  2. Nu știam că plecase deja.

I didn't know that he had already left.

Word by Word: Not I knew that had left already.

The pluperfect (plecase) shows anteriority—he left before the moment of not knowing.

  3. Credeam că va veni.

    I thought he would come.

Word by Word: I thought that will come.

The future tense (va veni) expresses pure posteriority relative to the past main verb.

  4. Am observat că plouă.

I noticed that it was raining.

Word by Word: I have noticed that rains.

Standard everyday sequence using the present tense (plouă) for past simultaneity.

  5. A declarat că era nevinovat.

He declared that he was innocent.

Word by Word: Has declared that was innocent.

Era locates the state of innocence at a past reference time. Its use is valid; tense choice does not mechanically follow the tense of a declarat.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a completed earlier period when you mean a simultaneous state.

A zis că a fost fericită.
    A zis că e fericită.

Both sentences are grammatical. For the intended meaning “she said she was happy at the time of speaking”, the retained present e can express simultaneity; a fost instead presents a completed period. Context can also support era.
