Current Normative Standard
DOOM3 is the Romanian Academy’s current normative dictionary of spelling, pronunciation, and morphology. Its entries can give one form, accepted alternatives, or restricted-use labels.
How It Works
Use the current entry
DOOM3, published in 2021 by the Romanian Academy’s Institute of Linguistics, gives normative spelling, pronunciation, and morphological forms. It also labels regional, old, and familiar usage. It does not always replace variation with a single correct form.
Verified examples
- A așeza accepts both third-person așază and așează. DOOM3 did not abolish așează.
- Aragaz, in the stove sense, has plural aragaze. The current entry establishes the form; do not infer that every such form was newly introduced in 2021.
- For electronic messages, the entry is e-mail, plural e-mailuri. The definite form is e-mailul, without an extra hyphen before -ul. Email is separately recorded with the meaning “enamel”.
- Antic is stressed on the first syllable: ántic. Check the stress mark in the actual entry rather than assuming every word has only one permitted accentuation.
- Niciun/nicio are written together in the negative-pronoun/adjective use: Nu am nicio problemă. Separate sequences occur in other constructions, so the rule is not “never write nici next to a separate numeral or article”.
Lookup practice
Read the whole entry, including slashes separating accepted variants and labels marking restricted usage. Different meanings of a word can have different forms. The loanword and â/î lessons apply these rules in specific constructions.
Examples (6)
- Ea așază cărțile pe raft.
She places the books on the shelf.
Word by Word: She places books-the on shelf.
DOOM3 accepts both așază and așează in the third person. This example uses așază; the alternative is also standard.
- Nicio persoană nu a întârziat la curs.
No person was late for the course.
Word by Word: No person not has delayed at course.
Nicio is written as one word when it functions as a negative pronominal adjective, as in nicio persoană. The spelling distinguishes this use from separate-word combinations with other meanings.
- Am cumpărat două aragaze noi.
I bought two new stoves.
Word by Word: I-have bought two stoves new.
The current DOOM3 entry gives aragaze for cooking stoves. This lookup does not establish that the form was introduced only in 2021.
- E-mailul tău a ajuns în folderul de spam.
Your email arrived in the spam folder.
Word by Word: Email-the your has arrived in folder-the of spam.
The electronic-message spelling is e-mail, with directly attached endings: e-mailuri and e-mailul. Do not add a second hyphen before -ul.
- Profesorul a explicat un text antic.
The teacher explained an ancient text.
Word by Word: Teacher-the has explained a text ancient.
In DOOM3, the word stress for 'antic' is officially fixed on the first syllable (án-tic).
- Radule, vino aici!
Radu, come here!
Word by Word: Radu-vocative, come here!
DOOM3 clarifies the vocative forms for proper names ending in -u, such as 'Radule', alongside the nominative-vocative usage.
Common Mistakes
Adding a hyphen before a directly attached article.
E-mail-ul tău a sosit.E-mailul tău a sosit.Keep the hyphen within e-mail, then attach -ul directly. The plural is likewise e-mailuri.
Separating nicio in its negative-adjective use.
Nu am nici o problemă.Nu am nicio problemă.For the intended negative adjective meaning “no problem”, write nicio together. Other constructions can have separate nici and o.
Using the nonstandard plural for cooking stoves.
Avem două aragazuri în bucătărie.Avem două aragaze în bucătărie. The current normative plural in the stove sense is aragaze.
