â / î in Derived Words
Â/Î in Derived Words
While Romanian usually uses 'â' in the middle of words, 'î' is kept if it's at the start of a base word that has been prefixed (e.g., re- + începe = reîncepe).
How It Works
In Romanian, the letters â and î represent the exact same sound: the high central unrounded vowel /ɨ/. The choice between them is purely orthographic (spelling-based).
The general rule is:
- î at the beginning of a word (e.g., început)
- î at the end of a word (e.g., a coborî)
- â everywhere else in the middle (e.g., cânta, român)
The morphological exception occurs when a word starting with î is modified by a prefix or joined in a compound word. In these cases, the î is preserved even though it is now technically in the middle of the word string. This helps the reader identify the root word immediately.
Common prefixes that trigger this include:
- ne- (negation): ne- + înțeles = neînțeles (misunderstood)
- re- (repetition): re- + începe = reîncepe (to restart)
- pre-: pre- + întâmpina = preîntâmpina (to prevent)
This also applies to compounds like bineînțeles (well + înțeles = of course). Note that this rule does not apply to suffixes; if you add a suffix to a word ending in î, it must change to â (e.g., a coborî becomes coborâre).
Examples (4)
- Spectacolul va reîncepe în zece minute.
The show will restart in ten minutes.
Word by Word: The show will re-begin in ten minutes.
The prefix 're-' is added to 'începe'. The 'î' is preserved to keep the root word visible.
- El se simte neînțeles de familia lui.
He feels misunderstood by his family.
Word by Word: He himself feels un-understood by family his.
The negative prefix 'ne-' is added to 'înțeles'. The 'î' remains 'î' because it is the start of the root.
- Bineînțeles că poți veni cu noi.
Of course you can come with us.
Word by Word: Well-understood that you can come with us.
'Bineînțeles' is a compound of 'bine' and 'înțeles'. The 'î' is preserved at the boundary of the two words.
- Trebuie să preîntâmpinăm orice problemă.
We must prevent any problem.
Word by Word: Must that we pre-meet any problem.
The prefix 'pre-' is added to 'întâmpina'. The 'î' stays because it marks the start of the base verb.
Common Mistakes
Using 'â' after a prefix because it is in the middle of the word.
reâncepereîncepeLearners often over-apply the 'middle = â' rule. Remember that the prefix boundary 'protects' the original 'î'.
Preserving 'î' when adding a suffix.
coborîrecoborâreThe exception only applies to prefixes and compounds. When adding a suffix to a word ending in 'î', the 'î' must change to 'â' because it is no longer at the end.
