The Perfect Subjunctive

رسیده + باشد → رسیده باشد. شاید تا حالا رسیده باشد.

How It Works

Person forms. Use رفته باشم، رفته باشی، رفته باشد، رفته باشیم، رفته باشید، رفته باشند. Keep the participle and auxiliary as separate words, and let the ending on باشـ identify the actor.

Negate the event. Say نرسیده باشد or, with a compound, کار نکرده باشد. In this ordinary pattern the negative prefix attaches to the participle, while باشـ keeps its person ending.

Possible completion. ممکن است نامه را خوانده باشد does not assert that the reading occurred. Compare factual نامه را خوانده است. The sentence may suggest a past event, but its uncertainty comes from the modal construction.

A future deadline. باید تا فردا کار را تمام کرده باشی requires completion by tomorrow. The same perfect structure is used even though the deadline is still ahead. Distinguish this obligation from a conclusion such as باید رسیده باشد based on evidence.

    Perhaps they have arrived by now.

  2. ممکن است نامه را خوانده باشند.

    They may have read the letter.

  3. امیدوارم اشتباه نکرده باشم.

    I hope I have not made a mistake.

    Negation is on نکرده.

  4. باید تا فردا کار را تمام کرده باشی.

    You must have finished the work by tomorrow.

    This is a required future completion, not an inference that it is already done.
