The present of anar (vau, vas, va) is irregular, but the simple past is not. It uses the stem an- and the same endings as parlèri.

Far follows the pattern of foguèri and aguèri: the stem fagu- plus the endings -èri, -ères, -èt. The u keeps the g hard before è.

Both verbs are common in stories: Anèrem al mercat (We went to the market) and Faguèron un viatge (They took a trip). In conversation, the compound past often takes their place: soi anat (I went) and ai fach (I did). Some writers print anguèt for anèt (and anguèron for anèron). Both are real, and print has anèt more often. This course uses anèt, the form of the Vèrbòc.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping the accent on the ending.

Un jorn, Joan anet a Rodés.
Un jorn, Joan anèt a Rodés.

The ending -èt carries a grave accent.

  • Building the simple past of far on the present stem.

    Fasèrem un viatge a Carcassona.
    Faguèrem un viatge a Carcassona.

Far does not take the regular endings after fas-. Its simple past is built on faguè-.
