Present of créser

Level 3

Créser is cresi, creses, crei, cresèm, cresètz, creson. It is followed by que.

How It Works

Créser is a soft way to give an opinion. Cresi que plòu means I think it is raining. It also means to believe.

créser
ieucresi
tucreses
el, elacrei
nosautrescresèm
vosautrescresètz
eles, elascreson

The he or she form is crei, not cres. Veire does the same thing: vesi, vei.

English can drop the word that: I think he is coming. Occitan keeps it: Cresi que ven.

The participle is cregut (Ai cregut, I believed it) and the imperfect is cresiá. A short answer is O cresi, I think so.

Examples (5)

  1. Cresi que Joan es a l'ostal.

I think Joan is at home.

Cresi is the ieu form; que opens the clause.

  2. Creses que plòu?

Do you think it is raining?

    Creses is the tu form.

  3. Maria crei que lo libre es bon.

Maria thinks the book is good.

Crei is the he or she form.

  4. Cresèm qu'es tard.

    We think it is late.

    Que becomes qu' before es.

  5. Cresètz que Marta ven deman?

Do you think Marta is coming tomorrow?

    Cresètz is the vosautres form.

Common Mistakes

  • Building the he or she form like a regular -re verb.

    Joan cres que ven.
    Joan crei que ven.

The he or she form of créser is crei. The bare stem cres is not a form of this verb.

  • Dropping que after créser, as English drops that.

    Cresi Joan ven deman.
    Cresi que Joan ven deman.

Occitan needs que to link the two clauses.

Learn This First

Créser is an irregular -re verb used before que, so que after verbs of saying and knowing comes first; those verbs already bring in the -re present.
