pas gaire
Not Much
Put pas gaire after the verb to say not much, and de before a noun to say not many.
How It Works
| Occitan | English |
|---|---|
| Parlas pas gaire. | You do not talk much. |
| N'i a pas gaire. | There are not many. |
| I a pas gaire de monde. | There are not many people. |
| Aquò m'agrada pas gaire. | I do not like that much. |
Gaire belongs to the negative: use it with pas. Writers sometimes leave pas out, and gaire still means hardly: Joan parlava gaire. Its partner for the positive is fòrça: Parlas fòrça (You talk a lot).
Gaire does not change for gender or number. With a noun, de comes between: pas gaire de monde, pas gaire de temps.
The pattern i a pas gaire also gives a time: i a pas gaire means not long ago.
