Imperative of -ir and -re Verbs

Level 3

Commands to tu and vosautres copy the present tense: finís, vend, finissètz, vendètz.

How It Works

An -ir verb keeps its -iss- for vosautres (finissètz) and has -isc- for nosautres (finiscam). The command to tu is the short form with an acute accent: finís. A -re verb needs no ending at all for tu: vend, met.

The nosautres form means let us. It does not match the present (vendèm, partissèm). The command is vendam, partiscam.

To tell someone not to do something, use another form with pas: finiscas pas. A few common verbs, such as prene, have their own commands. Both have their own entries.

Examples (5)

  1. Finís lo trabalh!

    Finish the work!

Finís is the short command for tu.

  2. Partiscam d'ora!

    Let us leave early!

Partiscam is the let us form of partir.

  3. Met lo libre sus la taula!

Put the book on the table!

Met is the short command of metre.

  4. Obrissètz la pòrta, se vos plai!

    Open the door, please!

Obrissètz is the vosautres form, with -iss-.

  5. Vendam la veitura!

    Let us sell the car!

Vendam is the let us form of vendre.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the present tu form for a command.

    Finisses lo trabalh!
    Finís lo trabalh!

Finisses is the present tense, so it says you finish the work. The command is the short form finís.

  • Using the present nosautres form for let us.

    Vendèm la veitura!
    Vendam la veitura!

Vendèm is the present tense: we sell the car. The let us command ends in -am.
