en çò de

At Someone's Place

Level 3

En çò de + person: at or to someone's place.

How It Works

En çò de stands before a person or a trade. It means at or to that person's home, shop or office: en çò de Joan, en çò del fornièr. The usual rules for de apply: del before lo, and d' before a vowel (en çò d'Amir).

The same phrase says where you go and where you are: Vau en çò de Joan and Soi en çò de Joan.

For we and you, Occitan uses a possessive instead of de and a pronoun: en çò nòstre (at our place), en çò vòstre (at your place). For he, she and they, de takes a stressed pronoun: en çò d'el, en çò d'eles.

You will see other spellings of the same phrase. Lagarde writes encò de for going to a place and ençò de for being there, but writers use ençò de for both. Laus lists en çò de, en cò de and a çò de. They all mean the same thing, and none is wrong. This course writes en çò de, the form most writers use.

Examples (5)

  1. Vau en çò de Joan.

    I am going to Joan's.

En çò de goes before the person.

  2. Anam en çò del fornièr.

We are going to the baker's.

    De + lo becomes del.

  3. Soi en çò de ma maire.

    I am at my mother's.

The same phrase says where you are.

  4. Dimenge manjam en çò d'Amir.

On Sunday we eat at Amir's.

De becomes d' before a vowel.

  5. Venètz en çò nòstre dimenge?

Are you coming to our place on Sunday?

For we, the possessive nòstre follows en çò.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the French chez.

    Vau chez Joan.
    Vau en çò de Joan.

Chez is French. Occitan says en çò de.

  • Putting de before nosautres or vosautres.

    Venètz en çò de nosautres?
    Venètz en çò nòstre?

For we and you, Occitan uses the possessive: en çò nòstre, en çò vòstre. Laus gives en çò nòstre for chez nous, and en çò de nosautres is not found in print.
