तिर

Toward and Around

Level 2Sounds Like tira

तिर is a loose direction or a loose time.

How It Works

तिर is a small ending, joined to the word before it. It points in a direction without naming the exact place.

UseExampleMeaning
Placeबजारतिरtoward the market
Directionपूर्वतिरtoward the east
Timeबेलुकातिरtowards evening
Clockदस बजेतिरaround ten o'clock

Use तिर when you do not need to be exact. If you want to say you go to a place, use the place plus जानु: म बजार जान्छु.

Compare तिर with मा. मा means in a place. तिर means in that direction: घरतिर आउनुहोस् (come this way, toward the house).

For a time, तिर is a loose way to say you are not sure of the exact moment: उनी दस बजेतिर आउँछिन् (she comes around ten).
