बजे

Telling the Time

Level 2Sounds Like bajē

बजे after a number means o'clock: सात बजे is seven o'clock.

How It Works

बजे means o'clock. It follows the number of the hour and needs no postposition to mean at that hour: म सात बजे उठ्छु (I get up at seven), बस आठ बजे छुट्छ (the bus leaves at eight).

To ask at what time something happens, use (what time do you go to the office?).

To ask the time now, say (what time is it now?). The answer is the hour and बज्यो: अहिले तीन बज्यो (it is three o'clock now). Another common answer is तीन बजेको छ, which comes at a later level. बजे and बज्यो come from the same verb बज्नु, which means to ring or to strike.

At this level, write the hour in words: सात बजे, not a digit. Halves and quarters have their own words, which come in the next entry.

Do not add मा to say at that hour. The word already means at that hour. Other endings do join it: नौ बजेदेखि (from nine o'clock) and पाँच बजेसम्म (until five o'clock).

Examples (4)

I get up at seven o'clock.

    बजे follows सात and needs no मा.

What time do you go to the office?

कति बजे asks about the hour.

I go to the office at nine.

The answer repeats the hour with बजे.

    What time is it now?

बज्यो is the past of बज्नु, used when the clock has struck.

Common Mistakes

  • Learners add a postposition after बजे.

बजे already means at that hour, so मा is not needed.
