-नुपर्छ

Saying What Must Be Done

Level 2Sounds Like nuparcha

Use -नुपर्छ when something has to be done.

How It Works

The word is built from the -नु form of the verb and पर्छ. Write it as one word: जानुपर्छ, गर्नुपर्छ, पढ्नुपर्छ.

The verb does not change for the doer. मैले, तिमीले, उसले and तपाईंले all go with the same -नुपर्छ. Only the doer takes ले.

TenseForm
Presentमैले जानुपर्छ।
Pastमैले जानुपर्‍यो।
Negative presentमैले जानुपर्दैन।
Negative pastमैले जानुपरेन।

-नुपर्छ states what is needed, in a calm way. People use it for rules and for tasks. The negative -नुपर्दैन means no need, which is a different idea from must not.

A past one-time duty uses the past: हिजो मैले बजार जानुपर्‍यो (I had to go to the market yesterday).

Examples (5)

  1. मैले भोलि काठमाडौं जानुपर्छ।

I must go to Kathmandu tomorrow.

The doer takes ले, and the verb group is one word.

  2. तिमीले यो किताब पढ्नुपर्छ।

    You must read this book.

The verb group does not change for तिमी.

  3. हामीले चाँडै उठ्नुपर्छ।

    We must get up early.

The same form works for हामी.

  4. तपाईंले औषधि खानुपर्छ।

    You must take the medicine.

-नुपर्छ is a calm, polite way to say must.

  5. हिजो मैले बजार जानुपर्‍यो।

I had to go to the market yesterday.

    The past is -नुपर्‍यो.

Common Mistakes

  • Changing the ending of -नुपर्छ to match the doer.

    मैले जानुपर्छु।
    मैले जानुपर्छ।

पर्छ stays the same for every doer. Only the doer takes ले.
