होइन र

Checking with होइन र

Level 2Sounds Like hō'ina ra

होइन र? asks for confirmation, like isn't that so or right?

How It Works

होइन र? is a tag that turns a statement into a question that expects a yes. English uses isn't it, aren't you or right at the end. Nepali adds होइन र after a comma: यो चिया मीठो छ, होइन र? (this tea is sweet, isn't it?).

It does not change the statement before it. Use the same verb and respect level as you would in a plain sentence: तपाईं नेपाली हुनुहुन्छ, होइन र? and उनी तपाईंको दिदी हुन्, होइन र?.

The listener answers with हो if they agree (yes, that is right) or होइन if they do not (no, that is not so).

Hindi uses है न for this. In Nepali, use होइन र, or the friendly है that comes at the end of a request. Speech also has the short हैन, as in हैन र?, which is a short form of होइन.

Examples (4)

  1. तपाईं नेपाली हुनुहुन्छ, होइन र?

    You are Nepali, aren't you?

The honorific verb हुनुहुन्छ stays before the tag.

  2. आज शनिबार हो, होइन र?

    Today is Saturday, isn't it?

The statement uses हो, and the tag asks for agreement.

  3. यो चिया मीठो छ, होइन र?

This tea is sweet, isn't it?

The tag works with छ too.

  4. उनी तपाईंको दिदी हुन्, होइन र?

She is your older sister, isn't she?

The verb हुन् goes with उनी.

Common Mistakes

  • Learners use the Hindi tag है न.

    तपाईं नेपाली हुनुहुन्छ, है न?
    तपाईं नेपाली हुनुहुन्छ, होइन र?

Nepali asks for confirmation with होइन र (or the short हैन र), not the Hindi है न.
