पानी पर्छ

Talking About the Weather

Level 2Sounds Like pānī parcha

Weather uses पर्नु for rain and snow, चल्नु for wind and छ for hot or cold.

How It Works

Nepali says water falls, not it rains. The weather noun is the doer: पानी पर्छ (it rains) and हिउँ पर्छ (it snows). The verb पर्नु means to fall.

The wind uses a different verb, चल्नु (to move): हावा चल्छ (the wind blows).

For hot or cold, use the noun with छ: आज जाडो छ (it is cold today), आज गर्मी छ (it is hot today). The noun जाडो means cold, and गर्मी means heat.

Change the tense for time: हिजो पानी पर्‍यो (it rained yesterday) and भोलि हिउँ पर्छ (it will snow tomorrow). The present can also mean a near future. For rain falling right now, say पानी पर्दै छ (it is raining), which has its own entry.

For a feeling of cold in your body, use the other pattern: मलाई जाडो लाग्छ. Compare आज जाडो छ, which describes the day, and मलाई जाडो लाग्छ, which describes you.
