मन पर्छ

Liking Something

Level 1Sounds Like mana parcha

Liking is shown with the person first, the thing next and मन पर्छ last.

How It Works

Nepali usually does not use a verb that means like. It says the thing pleases the person, using मन पर्छ.

WhoWhatVerb
मलाईचियामन पर्छ।
मलाईकिताबहरूमन पर्छन्।

The person who likes takes लाई: मलाई, तपाईंलाई, सरितालाई. The verb does not change for that person. It changes for the thing: मन पर्छ for one thing, मन पर्छन् for more than one.

The negative is मन पर्दैन: मलाई मासु मन पर्दैन (I do not like meat).

Do not say म चिया मन पर्छ. म is the wrong form here. Use मलाई.

Examples (5)

  1. मलाई चिया मन पर्छ।

    I like tea.

मलाई marks the person who likes, and the verb follows चिया.

  2. मलाई किताबहरू मन पर्छन्।

    I like books.

The thing liked is plural, so the verb is मन पर्छन्.

  3. तपाईंलाई नेपाली खाना मन पर्छ?

    Do you like Nepali food?

    The polite question uses तपाईंलाई.

  4. सरितालाई मम मन पर्छ।

    Sarita likes momos.

    A name takes लाई: सरितालाई.

  5. मलाई मासु मन पर्दैन।

    I do not like meat.

    मन पर्दैन is the negative.

Common Mistakes

  • Using म instead of मलाई.
