हुन्छ / हुँदैन

Saying OK and Not Allowed

Level 1Sounds Like huncha ra hum̐daina

Two short words answer questions about permission and agreement.

How It Works

हुन्छ and हुँदैन are the everyday words for yes you can and no you cannot.

WordMeaningExample
हुन्छOK, it is allowedहुन्छ, म आउँछु।
हुँदैनno, it is not allowedयहाँ फोन गर्न हुँदैन।

To ask permission, use a verb that ends in -न, then हुन्छ: यहाँ बस्न हुन्छ? means may I sit here? The -न form is taught fully at Level 2, with -न सक्नु (can), so for now learn यहाँ बस्न हुन्छ? and यहाँ फोन गर्न हुँदैन as ready-made chunks.

Answer with हुन्छ to agree to an offer: चिया पिउनुहुन्छ? (will you have tea?) हुन्छ (OK).

The negative is written हुँदैन, with a chandrabindu over हु. हुदैन is wrong.

हुन्छ is a flexible answer. It can mean OK, fine, will do, or you may.
