Numbers Up to One Hundred

Level 2Sounds Like ēghāra, bīsa ra pacāsa

Nepali numbers from eleven to ninety-nine are separate words: एघार, बीस, पचास.

How It Works

Nepali does not build numbers by saying ten and one. Eleven to ninety-nine each have their own word. Start with the teens and the tens.

Numbers between the tens, such as बाइस (22), are separate words as well.

The number goes before the noun: बजारमा पचास जना मान्छे छन् (there are fifty people in the market). For people, use जना after the number. For things, वटा often joins the number (तीनवटा किताब). A unit such as रुपैयाँ or वर्ष needs no counting word, as in बीस रुपैयाँ.

Examples (4)

There are fifty people in the market.

    पचास जना counts people.

    I have twenty rupees.

    बीस goes before रुपैयाँ.

    She is fifteen years old.

पन्ध्र comes before वर्ष, and -की is for a girl.

There are twenty-two students in the class.

बाइस is its own word for twenty-two.
