After a month, add -मध्ये: जूनमध्ये, डिसेंबरमध्ये. A month that ends in -ी can also take -त: जानेवारीत.

The seasons are masculine words that end in -ा, so they change before an ending: उन्हाळा becomes उन्हाळ्यात, पावसाळा becomes पावसाळ्यात and हिवाळा becomes हिवाळ्यात.

A month takes -मध्ये to say in that month: जूनमध्ये शाळा सुरू होते. A month that ends in -ी can also take -त: जानेवारीत.

Ask with कोणत्या महिन्यात? (in which month?) or कोणत्या ऋतूत? (in which season?). The answer repeats the ending: मे महिन्यात.

The months are also used for dates: १ जानेवारी. The seasons describe weather in everyday talk: उन्हाळ्यात खूप उकाडा असतो (it is very hot in summer). Seasons go with weather words such as उकाडा (heat), पाऊस (rain) and थंडी (cold).

Compare the two endings: पावसाळ्यात is in the monsoon, and जूनमध्ये is in June. A season takes -त, and a month such as जून takes -मध्ये.

  5. डिसेंबरमध्ये दिवस लहान असतात.

    The days are short in December.

    डिसेंबरमध्ये says in December.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the ending on a season.

    पावसाळा खूप पाऊस पडतो.
    पावसाळ्यात खूप पाऊस पडतो.

    A season needs -त to say in that season.

  • Using -त after जून.

    माझा वाढदिवस जूनत असतो.
    माझा वाढदिवस जूनमध्ये असतो.

    जून takes -मध्ये.
