अरे / अगं / अहो
Calling Someone
रे and गं close a friendly request, and they follow the same split: रे for a man, गं for a woman.
How It Works
| Call | Who | Example |
|---|---|---|
| अरे | a man or a boy you know well | अरे ओंकार, इकडे ये! |
| अगं | a woman or a girl you know well | अगं सई, चहा झाला. |
| अहो | a stranger or an elder, of either sex | अहो काका, थांबा! |
The call also sets the verb form. After अरे and अगं, the order is plain: ये, थांब, चल. After अहो, the order is polite: या, थांबा, चला.
The endings रे and गं come last: चल रे! (come on) to a man, and थांब गं! (wait) to a woman. They show friendship, so do not use them with an older stranger.
Use a name or a family word after the call: अहो ताई (to an older woman you do not know), अरे दादा (to an older brother). The call comes first, then the name, then the request.
