Malay technical register

Level 5

Technical Malay (Bahasa Melayu Tinggi) is the formal register used in professional and academic settings. It relies on precise word order (Head-Modifier) and complex affixes to create specialized vocabulary from root words.

How It Works

The Malay technical register is essential for navigating formal environments like law, science, and administration. It is characterized by three main pillars:

1. The Hukum D-M (Diterangkan-Menerangkan):
In Malay, the word being described (the Head) generally comes before the word describing it (the Modifier).
Example: Loji rawatan air (Plant + treatment + water). In English, this is 'Water treatment plant.' While this is the standard rule, exceptions exist for numbers, quantifiers, and titles.

2. Specialized Affixation:
Technical terms are often abstract nouns derived from roots using specific circumfixes:

  • peN-...-an: Used for processes or actions (e.g., pemprosesan - processing).
  • ke-...-an: Used for states, conditions, or qualities (e.g., kemampanan - sustainability).
  • per-...-an: Used for systems or institutions (e.g., perbankan - banking).

3. Borrowing and Compounding:
Technical Malay relies heavily on peminjaman (borrowing) from English or Latin (e.g., ekosistem, struktur) and penggabungan kata (compounding) to create precise terms (e.g., urus setia for secretariat or kadar faedah for interest rate).

Examples (4)

  1. Pihak kerajaan sedang mempergiat usaha pembangunan mampan di kawasan luar bandar.

The government is intensifying sustainable development efforts in rural areas.

Word by Word: Side government progressive intensify effort development sustainable at area outside forest.

Note how 'pembangunan mampan' (sustainable development) follows the Head-Modifier rule, where 'pembangunan' (development) is the head.

  2. Sistem pengurusan sumber manusia syarikat itu telah diubah suai sepenuhnya.

That company's human resource management system has been completely overhauled.

Word by Word: System management source human company that already passive-change fit entirely.

'Pengurusan' (management) is a process noun formed with the peN-...-an circumfix.

  3. Kajian ini memfokuskan keberkesanan kos dalam sektor perkilangan.

This study focuses on cost-effectiveness in the manufacturing sector.

Word by Word: Study this focus effectiveness cost in sector manufacturing.

'Keberkesanan' (effectiveness) uses the ke-...-an circumfix to turn the adjective 'berkesan' (effective) into an abstract noun. Note that 'memfokuskan' is a transitive verb and does not require a preposition.

  4. Proses penyelarasan data sedang dijalankan oleh jabatan teknologi maklumat.

The data coordination process is being carried out by the information technology department.

Word by Word: Process coordination data progressive passive-run by department technology information.

'Penyelarasan' (coordination) shows the nasal assimilation where 's' in 'selaras' changes to 'ny'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using English word order (Modifier-Head) instead of Malay order (Head-Modifier).

    Air rawatan loji
    Loji rawatan air

In Malay, the 'Head' (Loji/Plant) must come first. 'Air rawatan loji' sounds like 'Water of the plant's treatment' rather than a 'Water treatment plant'.

  • Using root words instead of the required technical nominalization.

    Sistem urus data
    Sistem pengurusan data

In formal registers, you must use the derived noun 'pengurusan' (management) rather than the verb root 'urus' (to manage) to sound professional.
