Consonant retention in loans
While native Malay words drop initial p, t, k, s when prefixed with meN-, modern loanwords (especially technical or academic terms) usually retain them to keep the root word clear.
How It Works
In standard Malay (Bahasa Melayu Baku), the prefix meN- undergoes specific changes. For native roots starting with p, t, k, or s, the consonant is usually replaced by a nasal sound. However, for loanwords (words borrowed from English, Arabic, etc.), the consonant is often retained to keep the root recognizable:
- p becomes mem- (e.g., memproses, not memeroses)
- t becomes men- (e.g., mentafsir, not menafsir)
- k becomes meng- (e.g., mengkategorikan, not mengategorikan)
- s becomes men- (e.g., mensabotaj, not menyabotaj)
This retention is mandatory when the root starts with a consonant cluster (like st- in stabil or pr- in proses).
Important Exceptions:
1. Monosyllabic Loanwords: If a loanword has only one syllable, it follows the menge- rule regardless of the consonant (e.g., pos becomes mengepos, bom becomes mengebom).
2. The 'mempunyai' Exception: The native root punya (to have) is a unique exception that retains its 'p' in the formal form mempunyai, rather than following the standard meN- + p replacement rule.
Examples (5)
- Pihak bank sedang memproses permohonan pinjaman anda.
The bank is currently processing your loan application.
Word by Word: Side bank progressive process application loan you.
The root 'proses' (from English 'process') retains the 'p', so the prefix becomes 'mem-' instead of dropping the 'p'.
- Kita perlu mentafsir data ini dengan teliti.
We need to interpret this data carefully.
Word by Word: We need interpret data this with careful.
The root 'tafsir' (from Arabic) retains the 't', resulting in 'mentafsir' rather than 'menafsir'.
- Sistem ini akan mengkategorikan e-mel secara automatik.
This system will categorize emails automatically.
Word by Word: System this will categorize email in-manner automatic.
The root 'kategori' retains the 'k', so the prefix used is 'meng-'.
- Mereka cuba mensabotaj projek pembinaan itu.
They tried to sabotage that construction project.
Word by Word: They try sabotage project construction that.
The root 'sabotaj' retains the 's', resulting in 'mensabotaj' instead of 'menyabotaj'.
- Kerajaan sedang menswastakan beberapa agensi awam.
The government is privatizing several public agencies.
Word by Word: Government progressive privatize several agency public.
The root 'swasta' (private) starts with a cluster 'sw', so the 's' is retained as 'menswastakan'.
Common Mistakes
Applying native assimilation rules to modern loanwords.
Syarikat itu memeroses data pelanggan.Syarikat itu memproses data pelanggan. In formal Malay, 'memeroses' is considered incorrect because 'proses' is a loanword that should retain its initial 'p'.
Dropping the 's' in loanwords starting with consonant clusters.
Kita perlu menyetabilkan ekonomi.Kita perlu menstabilkan ekonomi. For roots starting with clusters like 'st', the 's' must be retained. 'Menyetabilkan' is incorrect; 'menstabilkan' is the standard form.
Applying retention rules to monosyllabic loanwords.
Dia mempos surat itu.Dia mengepos surat itu.Even if a loanword starts with a consonant that usually triggers retention, if the root is only one syllable (like 'pos'), you must use the 'menge-' prefix.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand why certain loanwords retain their initial consonants (p, t, k, s) when prefixed with meN-, a learner must first be familiar with the general meN- system and the standard rules where these specific consonants are usually deleted or replaced.
- Voiced and sonorant initials remain
This pattern is an exception to the standard rules of consonant retention for voiced and sonorant initials.
Level 3 - Root-initial p replacement
Understanding that p, t, k, and s are normally replaced is necessary to recognize that loanword retention is an exception to the standard rule.
