Nasal alternation in agent nouns
The peN- prefix turns verbs into nouns, usually representing the doer (agent) or the tool (instrument). The 'N' stands for a nasal sound that changes depending on the root word's first letter.
How It Works
The peN- prefix has six distinct forms (allomorphs) based on the starting sound of the root word:
- pe-: Used with roots starting with l, m, n, ny, ng, r, w, y.
Example: lukis (draw) → pelukis (artist). - pem-: Used with roots starting with b, p, v, f. The p is replaced by m.
Example: baca (read) → pembaca (reader); pukul (hit) → pemukul (hammer/striker). - pen-: Used with roots starting with d, t, c, j, sy, z. The t is replaced by n.
Example: tulis (write) → penulis (writer). - peny-: Used with roots starting with s. The s is replaced by ny.
Example: sapu (sweep) → penyapu (broom). - peng-: Used with roots starting with vowels (a, e, i, o, u) or g, h, k. The k is replaced by ng.
Example: ajar (teach) → pengajar (teacher); karang (compose) → pengarang (author). - penge-: Used specifically for monosyllabic (one-syllable) roots.
Example: cat (paint) → pengecat (painter).
Important Note on Loanwords and Clusters: In standard Malay, initial consonants are usually retained (not dropped) if the root is a loanword or starts with a consonant cluster.
Example: kritik → pengkritik (critic); proses → pemproses (processor); stabil → penstabil (stabilizer).
While usually denoting a person, it can also denote a tool (e.g., penyapu) or even a person with a specific characteristic (e.g., penakut - a coward, from takut).
Examples (4)
- Penulis itu sedang menyiapkan novel terbaharunya.
That writer is currently finishing his latest novel.
Word by Word: Writer that currently finish novel latest-his.
Here, 'tulis' (write) becomes 'penulis' (writer) by replacing the 't' with 'n'.
- Kita memerlukan pengecat untuk mewarnakan dinding pejabat ini.
We need a painter to color the walls of this office.
Word by Word: We need painter for color wall office this.
Because 'cat' is a one-syllable root, the 'penge-' allomorph is used.
- Penyapu ini sudah patah pemegangnya.
This broom has a broken handle.
Word by Word: Broom this already broken handle-its.
In this case, 'peN-' forms an instrument (broom) from the verb 'sapu' (sweep), with 's' changing to 'ny'.
- Pengurus bank itu sangat peramah.
That bank manager is very friendly.
Word by Word: Manager bank that very friendly.
'Urus' (manage) starts with a vowel, so it takes the 'peng-' prefix to become 'pengurus'.
Common Mistakes
Forgetting to replace the initial consonants K, P, T, or S in native roots.
pentulispenulisLearners often keep the 't' in 'tulis', but in standard Malay, the 't' must be replaced by 'n' when using the 'pen-' prefix for native roots.
Using 'penge-' for words that are not one syllable.
pengeajarpengajarThe 'penge-' form is strictly for one-syllable roots like 'cat' or 'bom'. For 'ajar', which has two syllables, use 'peng-'.
Dropping the initial consonant of a loanword or consonant cluster.
pengritikpengkritikUnlike native roots, loanwords (like 'kritik') or roots starting with consonant clusters (like 'protes') usually retain their initial consonant when prefixed with peN-.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The peN- nasal alternation pattern is a morphophonemic process where the prefix peN- changes its final nasal sound or triggers consonant replacement in the root word (e.g., tulis to penulis). To understand this, learners must first be familiar with the basic function of the peN- prefix and the general system of nasal allomorphy used in Malay prefixes, particularly the meN- system which shares the same rules.

This pattern provides the basic functional understanding of the peN- prefix for creating agent nouns before learning the specific phonological changes.
Level 2 - Root-initial p replacement
Understanding how initial consonants like 'p' are replaced by nasals in the meN- system is essential, as peN- follows the exact same morphophonemic rules.

While peN- creates the 'doer', peN-...-an creates the 'process' or 'action' related to the verb.

Learners often confuse peN- nouns with per- nouns; peN- usually relates to meN- verbs, while per- relates to ber- verbs.

Nouns formed with peN- that refer to people often use the 'orang' classifier when counting.
