ke-...-an (keadaan)

Abstract States with Ke-...-an

Level 3

The ke-...-an pattern turns root words into abstract nouns. It focuses on the state or quality of something (e.g., 'clean' becomes 'cleanliness').

How It Works

The ke-...-an circumfix is a primary tool in Malay for creating abstract nouns. It is most frequently applied to adjectives, but can also be used with verbs and nouns.

1. From Adjectives (Qualities):
This is the most common usage. It transforms a descriptive quality into an abstract concept.

  • sihat (healthy) → kesihatan (health)
  • indah (beautiful) → keindahan (beauty)
  • adil (fair/just) → keadilan (justice)

2. From Verbs (Events/States):
When applied to verbs, it often describes the state resulting from the action or the event itself.

  • mati (to die) → kematian (death)
  • datang (to come) → kedatangan (arrival)
  • lahir (to be born) → kelahiran (birth)

3. From Nouns (Status/Collective):
It can define a status or a collective entity related to the root noun.

  • raja (king) → kerajaan (kingdom/government)
  • anggota (member) → keanggotaan (membership)

Important Distinction:
Learners often confuse ke-...-an with peN-...-an. While ke-...-an refers to the state or quality, peN-...-an usually refers to the process or act. For example, kegunaan is 'usefulness/utility' (a state), while penggunaan is 'the act of using' (a process).

Examples (5)

  1. Kesihatan adalah harta yang paling berharga.

Health is the most valuable treasure.

Word by Word: Health is treasure that most valuable.

Here, the adjective 'sihat' (healthy) becomes the abstract noun 'kesihatan' (health).

  2. Kita mesti menjaga kebersihan kawasan ini.

We must maintain the cleanliness of this area.

Word by Word: We must guard cleanliness area this.

The adjective 'bersih' (clean) is transformed into the noun 'kebersihan' (cleanliness).

  3. Kehadiran anda amat dihargai.

    Your presence is greatly appreciated.

Word by Word: Presence you very appreciated.

The verb 'hadir' (to be present) becomes the noun 'kehadiran' (presence).

  4. Keindahan pantai itu menarik ramai pelancong.

The beauty of that beach attracts many tourists.

Word by Word: Beauty beach that attract many tourists.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing the state noun (ke-...-an) with the process noun (peN-...-an).

Kebinaan bangunan itu mengambil masa dua tahun.
Pembinaan bangunan itu mengambil masa dua tahun.

'Pembinaan' refers to the process of building, whereas 'ke-...-an' is for abstract states. 'Kebinaan' is not a standard word in this context.

  • Forgetting the suffix -an and only using the prefix ke-.

    Jaga kesihat anda.
    Jaga kesihatan anda.

The prefix 'ke-' alone is used for ordinal numbers (e.g., ketiga - third). To form an abstract noun, you must include the '-an' suffix.
