men-
The Men- Form of MeN-
The men- prefix is one of several allomorphs (alongside me-, mem-, meng-, meny-, and menge-) within the meN- prefix system. It is the standard form used to create active transitive verbs when the root word begins with the consonants d, c, j, z, sy, or t.
How It Works
The men- allomorph is a core component of Standard Malay grammar, required for professional, academic, and literary contexts to mark active voice.
1. Direct Attachment (No changes)
The prefix men- attaches directly to roots starting with these consonants:
- d: dapat → mendapat (to get)
- c: cari → mencari (to search)
- j: jawab → menjawab (to answer)
- z: ziarah → menziarah (to visit)
- sy: syukur → mensyukuri (to be grateful for)
2. The 't' Replacement Rule
In standard Malay roots starting with a single t, the t is dropped and replaced by the nasal n:
- tulis → menulis (to write)
- tolong → menolong (to help)
3. Retention of 't' (Exceptions)
The initial t is retained (not dropped) in two specific cases:
- Loanwords: Certain formal terms, often of Arabic origin, keep the t to maintain clarity (e.g., tadbir → mentadbir).
- Consonant Clusters: If the root starts with a cluster like tr or ts, the t remains (e.g., traktor → mentraktor).
Examples (5)
- Dia sedang mencari kunci keretanya.
He/She is searching for his/her car keys.
Word by Word: He/She [progressive marker] search key car-his/her.
The root 'cari' (to search) starts with 'c', so 'men-' is added directly.
- Ali menulis surat kepada ibunya.
Ali is writing a letter to his mother.
Word by Word: Ali write letter to mother-his.
The root 'tulis' (to write) starts with 't', which is dropped and replaced by the 'n' in 'men-'.
- Kita perlu mentadbir urusan ini dengan baik.
We need to manage this matter well.
Word by Word: We need administer matter this with good.
The root 'tadbir' is a formal loanword; therefore, the 't' is retained instead of being dropped.
- Siti menjawab soalan guru itu.
Siti answered the teacher's question.
Word by Word: Siti answer question teacher that.
The root 'jawab' (to answer) starts with 'j', so 'men-' is attached directly.
- Mereka mendapat hadiah daripada pengetua.
They received a gift from the principal.
Word by Word: They get gift from principal.
The root 'dapat' (to get/receive) starts with 'd', so 'men-' is attached directly.
Common Mistakes
Failing to drop the 't' in common words.
Saya mentulis buku.Saya menulis buku. For native or common Malay roots starting with 't', the 't' must be dropped and replaced by 'n'.
Dropping the 'd' by mistake.
Dia menapat surat.Dia mendapat surat.Unlike 't', the letter 'd' is never dropped when adding the 'men-' prefix.
Using 'men-' for roots starting with 's'.
Dia mensapu lantai.Dia menyapu lantai.Roots starting with 's' use the meny- allomorph, not 'men-'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand the men- allomorph, a learner needs to be familiar with the general meN- prefix system used for active transitive verbs. It is also helpful to have seen other allomorphs like mem- to understand the pattern of how the nasal prefix adapts to the starting consonant of the root word.
