नीक लगैत अछि

Liking Something

Level 1Sounds Like nīka lagaita achi

नीक लगैत अछि says that a person likes something.

How It Works

Maithili does not say "I like fish" with a verb for the person. It says "to me fish seems good." The person takes the form you use for "to me", and the thing you like is the subject of अछि.

Who likes itForm
Iहमरा
you (polite)अहाँ केँ
he, she (plain)ओकरा
a child or a nameबउआ केँ, प्रिया केँ

The ending नीक लगैत अछि stays the same for all of these. Add बड्ड before नीक for "like a lot", and नहि before लगैत for "don't like".

When the thing liked is plural, the verb still stays अछि in everyday speech: हमरा आम नीक लगैत अछि. For a respected person, the verb takes -नि: हुनका नीक लगैत छनि. That form is taught at a later level.

Common Mistakes

The person who likes something takes the हमरा form, not हम.
