Very Polite Requests
A very polite request to a guest uses the -ल form with जाउ.
How It Works
Compare the two levels of politeness.
| Everyday | Very polite |
|---|---|
(Please come in and sit down). (Please sing a song for us).
Grierson described this form as a passive: it is like saying "let it be sat". The request avoids pointing straight at the person, which is why it is so polite.
Always write जाउ, never जाए. जाए is the infinitive and the wish form, and it does not fit this slot.
Use it with अहाँ or अपने, not with तोँ.
