Ordinal Numbers
First, second and third are прв, втор, трет. From five on, most numbers add -ти: пет → петти, десет → десетти. Sixth to eighth are shorter: шести, седми, осми. Живеам на третиот кат. (I live on the third floor.)
How It Works
The forms (masculine, feminine, neuter):
- 1st — прв, прва, прво
- 2nd — втор, втора, второ
- 3rd — трет, трета, трето
- 4th — четврти (also четврт), четврта, четврто
- 5th — петти, петта, петто
- 6th to 8th — шести, седми, осми
- 9th, 10th — деветти, десетти
From five on, most numbers add -ти, so петти, деветти and десетти are spelled with a double т. Sixth to eighth are shorter: шест → шести, седум → седми, осум → осми. Higher ordinals work the same way: единаесетти, дваесетти. In a compound number only the last part changes: дваесет и први (21st). See броеви над десет.
The first four also have a masculine form in -и: први, втори, трети, четврти. You hear it in dates, на први мај (see датуми: на први мај).
Agreement: like any adjective (see придавки: нов; нова; ново; нови): втор кат, втора улица, второ одделение, втори пат.
The article: ordinals usually talk about one specific item, so they often take the article. It goes on the ordinal because it comes first (see член кај придавки: новиот; новата): првиот ден, втората улица, третото место, петтиот кат. After a possessive, the article moves to the possessive: мојот прв автомобил.

Common Mistakes
Putting the article on the noun instead of the ordinal.
Прв денот беше тежок.Првиот ден беше тежок.The article goes on the first word of the phrase, so it attaches to the ordinal: првиот ден.
Leaving the ordinal in the masculine before a feminine noun.
Свртете во втор улица.Свртете во втора улица.Ordinals agree like adjectives: втор кат, втора улица, второ место.
Writing петти with a single т.
Живеам на петиот кат.Живеам на петтиот кат.Петти is пет + -ти, so it keeps both т sounds in every form: петти, петта, петтиот.
