откако / пред да

After and Before

Level 3Sounds Like otkako; pred da

To say after, use откако with an ordinary verb; to say before, use пред да with a present verb: Откако јадевме, излеговме. · Пред да излезеш, заклучи ја вратата.

How It Works

These two words order events in time.

Откако (after) introduces the event that happens first. Its verb takes the tense you need:

  • past: Откако јадевме, излеговме. (After we ate, we went out.) A perfective verb here is in the aorist: Откако се пресели во Скопје, почна да работи во банка.
  • future, with ќе and usually a perfective verb: Откако ќе завршиш, јави ми се. (After you finish, call me.)

For the future, the pattern is like кога ќе. The word откога can be used in the same way.

Пред да (before) introduces the event that happens later. It always takes да and a present-form verb, whatever the time:

  • Пред да излезеш, заклучи ја вратата. (Before you go out, lock the door.)
  • Пред да заминам, ѝ се јавив на мајка ми. (Before I left, I called my mother.)
  • Секогаш пијам кафе пред да почнам со работа. (I always drink coffee before I start work.)

The verb after пред да is usually perfective (see свршен глагол по да; ќе; ако).

With a noun: use the prepositions пред and по without a verb: пред ручекот (before lunch), по ручекот (after lunch). See пред + време; за + време.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the verb after пред да into the past.

Пред да излегов, ја заклучив вратата.
Пред да излезам, ја заклучив вратата.

After пред да the verb is always in the present form. The past time is shown by заклучив.

  • Leaving out да after пред.

    Пред излезеш, заклучи ја вратата.
Пред да излезеш, заклучи ја вратата.

Пред alone is a preposition for nouns, as in пред ручекот. Before a verb it needs да.
