How It Works

Asking someone to repeat.

  • Можете ли да повторите? Could you repeat that? (polite or to several people)
  • Можеш ли да повториш? Can you repeat that? (to a friend)
  • Може ли уште еднаш? Once more, please?

Asking them to slow down. Можете ли да зборувате побавно? In quick speech this shortens to Можете ли побавно? Побавно means more slowly (Comparing Things).

Saying you missed it.

  • Извинете, не разбрав. Sorry, I did not catch that. (разбрав is the aorist: I did not understand what you just said.)
  • Не разбирам. I do not understand (in general).
  • Како, ве молам? Pardon?

How the request is built. Може (can) takes да and a verb with a personal ending, because Macedonian has no infinitive (Can Must and Should). Ли after the first word turns it into a question (Yes or No Questions). Use the Вие forms with strangers and the ти forms with friends (Informal and Polite You).

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out да before the second verb.

  • Mixing polite and informal forms in one request.
