Two Short Pronouns Together

Two short pronouns go in the order to-someone + object: Ми го даде. (He gave it to me.) · Ќе ти ја кажам. (I will tell it to you.)

How It Works

Verbs such as дава (give), кажува (tell), носи (bring) and покажува (show) can have two objects: a thing and a person who receives it. When both are short pronouns, the order never changes:

  • first the to-someone pronoun: ми, ти, му, ѝ, ни, ви, им
  • then the object pronoun: го, ја, ги

So you get pairs like ми го (it to me), ти ја (her or it to you), му ги (them to him), ѝ го (it to her) and им ги (them to them).

Where the pair goes: right before the verb, and after не, ќе or да: Не ми го даде. · Ќе ти ја кажам. · Сакам да ти ги покажам. In a command the pair follows the verb in the same order: Дај ми го! (see заповеден начин + кратка заменка).

With a named thing: a definite object is still doubled, so the pair often appears next to a noun: Ми ја даде книгата. (He gave me the book.) See удвојување на определен објект.

With се: се also comes after the to-someone pronoun: Ми се допаѓа. · Ќе ти се јавам.

    Вистината is definite, so ја repeats it.

    They did not show us the apartment.

  5. Ѝ го испратив пакетот.

    I sent her the package.

  6. Дали ви ја донесоа сметката?

    Did they bring you the bill?

    Word by Word: Whether to-you it brought-they the-bill?

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the object pronoun before the to-someone pronoun.

    Го ми даде.
    Ми го даде.

    The order is fixed: the person who receives comes first, then the thing. Think "to me, it".

  • Dropping the object pronoun when the thing is definite.

    Ми даде книгата.
    Ми ја даде книгата.

    Книгата is a specific book, so it must also be repeated with ја. Only an indefinite object goes without: Ми даде книга.
