ме боли
Saying Something Hurts
To say something hurts, put the person in pain as an object pronoun before боли: Ме боли главата. (I have a headache, literally "Me hurts the head.")
How It Works
The pattern. Object pronoun + боли or болат + body part with the article:
- Ме боли главата. — My head hurts.
- Те боли ли грлото? — Does your throat hurt?
- Го боли стомакот. — His stomach hurts.
- Ја болат очите. — Her eyes hurt.
Macedonian does not add my or her here, because the pronoun already shows whose head it is.
Object pronouns, not to-someone pronouns. Боли uses the set from кратки заменки: ме; те; го; ја; нѐ; ве; ги: ме, not ми.
Other tenses. Ме болеше забот цела ноќ. (My tooth hurt all night.) · Утре ќе те болат мускулите. (Your muscles will hurt tomorrow.) · Не ме боли. (It doesn't hurt.)
Naming the person. Keep the short pronoun even when you name the person: Марко го боли коленото. (Marko's knee hurts.) · Мене ме боли главата, а тебе? This follows удвојување на определен објект.
Hurt feelings. Боли can also describe emotional pain: Ме боли што не ми се јави. (It hurts that you didn't call me.) The noun for pain is болка: Имам болки во грбот. (I have back pain.)

Common Mistakes
Using a to-someone pronoun with боли.
Ми боли главата.Ме боли главата.Боли takes the object pronouns ме, те, го, ја and so on. Ми belongs to a different set.
Keeping боли with a plural body part.
Ме боли нозете.Ме болат нозете.The body part is the subject, so a plural part needs the plural verb болат.
