кај

At Someone's Place

Level 2Sounds Like kaǰ

Кај means at someone's place or to someone's place: Сум кај Марко. (I am at Marko's.) (I am going to the doctor.)

How It Works

A person's place. Where English says at Marko's or to my grandma's, Macedonian says кај and the person:

  • Сум кај Марко. I am at Marko's.
I will sleep at my grandma's.
I am going to the doctor.
I am going to the hairdresser.

Like во and на, кај is used both for where you are and where you are going. For buildings and cities, use во or на instead (Going Somewhere).

Pronouns. After кај a pronoun takes its full form (Full Object Pronouns):

  • Дојди кај нас на вечера. Come to our place for dinner.
At your place or mine?

Кај нас: where we live. Кај нас and кај вас can also mean in our country or where you live: Кај нас лете е многу топло. (It is very hot here in summer.)

By a landmark. Кај can also mean near or by a well-known spot: Се сретнавме кај мостот. (We met by the bridge.)

As a question word. In everyday speech кај can also ask where: Кај си? The question word taught first, and used in careful writing, is каде (Question Words).
