да не беше

Were It Not for

Level 5Sounds Like da ne beše

Да не беше + a person or thing = if it had not been for: Да не беше ти, ќе се изгубев. (If it had not been for you, I would have got lost.)

How It Works

Building it. Put да не before the imperfect of сум, then the person or thing that made the difference: Да не беше ти... (If it had not been for you...) Да не беше дождот... (If it had not been for the rain...)

Agreement. The form of сум matches the person or thing after it:

  • Да не бев јас, ќе заборавеа. (If it had not been for me, they would have forgotten.)
  • Да не беше мајка ми, немаше да учам. (If it had not been for my mother, I would not have studied.)
  • Да не беа пријателите, ќе се откажев. (If it had not been for my friends, I would have given up.)

The result. Use ќе + imperfect for what would have happened: ќе се изгубев. For a negative result, the usual form is немаше да + a present verb: немаше да успеам (I would not have succeeded).

Past or present. The same words can describe the past or the present: Да не беше сообраќајот, немаше да доцнам. (If it had not been for the traffic, I would not have been late.) Да не беше работата, ќе живеев на село. (If it were not for my job, I would live in the countryside.)

A whole fact. To name a fact instead of a thing, use да не беше тоа што: Да не беше тоа што ми се јави, ќе заспиев. (If you had not called me, I would have fallen asleep.) This pattern is one kind of unreal condition with да. Ако не беше is also heard with the same meaning.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out не.

Да беше ти, ќе се изгубев. (meaning: If it had not been for you, I would have got lost.)
Да не беше ти, ќе се изгубев.

Without не, the sentence means "if it had been you". Не is what turns it into "if it had not been for you".

  • Keeping беше with a plural.

Да не беше пријателите, ќе се откажев.
Да не беа пријателите, ќе се откажев.

The form of сум matches the person or thing after it: беа for a plural, бев for јас.

  • Using a present verb in the result.

Да не беше ти, ќе се изгубам.
Да не беше ти, ќе се изгубев.

Ќе се изгубам means "I will get lost". For something that did not happen, the result needs the imperfect: ќе се изгубев.
