да / ако + Imperfect

Unreal Conditions

Level 4Sounds Like da; ako + imperfekt

For an "if" that is not real, use да or ако with the imperfect, and ќе with the imperfect in the result: Да имав време, ќе дојдев. (If I had had time, I would have come.)

How It Works

Compare a real condition with an unreal one:

  • Real (it can still happen), from ако + сегашно време: Ако имам време, ќе дојдам. (If I have time, I will come.)
  • Unreal (it is not true or did not happen): Ако имав време, ќе дојдев. (If I had time / had had time, I would come / would have come.)

The recipe.

  • "If" half: да or ако + imperfect: да имав, ако знаев, да бев, да дојдеше.
  • Result half: ќе + imperfect (ќе + имперфект): ќе дојдев, ќе ти кажев.

Perfective verbs take their imperfect form here: Да дојдеше порано, ќе го видеше. (If you had come earlier, you would have seen him.) See имперфект од свршени глаголи.

Past or present? Macedonian uses the same forms for both, and the situation makes the time clear:

  • Да бев на твое место, ќе прифатев. (If I were you, I would accept.)
  • Ако не врнеше, ќе одевме на излет. (If it hadn't rained, we would have gone on a trip.)

Negatives. Put не in the "if" half: да немав, ако не беше. In the result, use немаше да + present: Да знаев, немаше да дојдам. (If I had known, I would not have come.)

Order. Either half can come first: Ќе дојдев, да имав време.

Some formal writing uses би in the result (Ако знаев, би ти кажал), but ќе + imperfect is the usual choice. For imagined future situations, see кога би ... би.

Examples (6)

  1. Да имав време, ќе дојдев.

If I had had time, I would have come.

Word by Word: If I-had time, would I-came.

  2. Ако знаев, ќе ти кажев.

If I had known, I would have told you.

Word by Word: If I-knew, would you I-told.

  3. Да бев на твое место, ќе прифатев.

If I were you, I would accept.

Word by Word: If I-was in your place, would I-accepted.

The same forms describe an imagined present.

  4. Ако не врнеше, ќе одевме на излет.

If it hadn't rained, we would have gone on a trip.

Word by Word: If not rained, would we-went on trip.

  5. Да дојдеше порано, ќе го видеше.

If you had come earlier, you would have seen him.

Word by Word: If you-came earlier, would him you-saw.

Дојдеше is the imperfect of the perfective дојде; it is the same for "you" and "he".

  6. Да имавме пари, ќе патувавме многу.

If we had money, we would travel a lot.

Word by Word: If we-had money, would we-traveled a-lot.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing a present "if" half with a ќе + imperfect result.

    Ако имам време, ќе дојдев.
    Ако имав време, ќе дојдев.

An unreal condition needs the imperfect in both halves. For a real condition, use the present in both: Ако имам време, ќе дојдам.

  • Using the present of a perfective verb after да in an unreal condition.

Да дојдеш порано, ќе го видеше.
Да дојдеше порано, ќе го видеше.

Дојдеш is a present form, so it cannot describe a past that did not happen. With ќе го видеше in the result, the "if" half needs the imperfect дојдеше.
