ませんでした
Polite Past Negative
Use 〜ませんでした to say you did not do something in the past in a polite way. It is the past negative form specifically for verbs and is the past tense version of 〜ません.
How It Works
The pattern 〜ませんでした is the standard way to express the past negative of verbs in polite Japanese (teineigo).
1. How to form it:
It attaches to the ます-stem (continuative stem) of the verb:
- Group 1 (Godan): Change the final -u sound to -i. (e.g., 行く(いく) → 行き + ませんでした)
- Group 2 (Ichidan): Drop the final -ru. (e.g., 食べる(たべる) → 食べ + ませんでした)
- Group 3 (Irregular): する becomes しませんでした; 来る(くる) becomes 来(き)ませんでした.
2. Nuance:
This form indicates a finished non-event. For example, saying "I didn't eat breakfast" (朝ご飯を食べませんでした) implies the morning is over and you missed the chance. If you still might eat, you would use 〜ていません (haven't yet).
3. Register:
While 〜ませんでした is the textbook standard, in modern conversation you may also hear 〜なかったです. 〜ませんでした sounds slightly more formal and proper.
Examples (4)
- 昨日はどこにも行きませんでした。
I didn't go anywhere yesterday.
Word by Word: Yesterday (topic) anywhere to go-did-not.
Uses the verb 行く(いく) in its polite past negative form to describe a past fact.
- すみません、メールに気づきませんでした。
I'm sorry, I didn't notice your email.
Word by Word: Sorry, email to notice-did-not.
Uses 気づく(きづく - to notice) to explain a past oversight politely.
- 朝ご飯を食べませんでした。
I didn't eat breakfast.
Word by Word: Breakfast (object) eat-did-not.
Uses 食べる(たべる) to state that the action of eating did not occur.
- その本は読みませんでした。
I didn't read that book.
Word by Word: That book (topic) read-did-not.
Uses 読む(よむ) to indicate the completion of a non-action regarding a specific book.
Common Mistakes
Using the plain past negative with the polite copula.
書かないでした。書きませんでした。You cannot simply add です/でした to a plain negative verb (書かない). You must use the proper polite ending 〜ませんでした.
Using the plain past copula だった with ません.
行きませんでしたった。行きませんでした。You cannot mix the polite suffix 〜ません with the plain past copula だった. The polite past negative for verbs is always 〜ませんでした.
Using this form for adjectives.
おいしくませんでした。おいしくありませんでした。〜ませんでした is only for verbs. Adjectives require different negative past forms like 〜くありませんでした or 〜くなかったです.
