ました

Polite Past

Level 1Sounds Like mashita

ました is the standard way to say a verb in the past tense while remaining polite. It is the past tense version of the ます form.

How It Works

To create the polite past tense, you first need the masu-stem of the verb. Once you have the stem, you add ました for affirmative or ませんでした for negative.

1. Ichidan Verbs (Group 2):
Drop the final 〜る and add the ending.

  • 食べる(たべる)→ 食べ + ました = 食べました (ate)
  • 見る(みる)→ 見 + ませんでした = 見ませんでした (did not see)

2. Godan Verbs (Group 1):
Change the final 〜u sound to the corresponding 〜i sound and add the ending.

  • 行く(いく)→ 行き + ました = 行きました (went)
  • 飲む(のむ)→ 飲み + ませんでした = 飲みませんでした (did not drink)

3. Irregular Verbs:

  • する → しました (did) / しませんでした (did not do)
  • 来る(くる)→ 来ました(きました) (came) / 来ませんでした(きませんでした) (did not come)

Usage Notes:

  • Present Perfect: ました can mean "I have done" depending on context (e.g., 「もう食べました」 - "I have already eaten").
  • Discovery: The past tense is used when you suddenly find something or realize something is true (e.g., 「ありました!」 - "There it is!").

Examples (5)

  1. 昨日、デパートで靴を買いました。

I bought shoes at the department store yesterday.

Word by Word: Yesterday, department store at shoes (object) bought.

買いました(かいました) is the polite past form of 買う(かう - to buy).

  2. 田中さんはさっき来ました。

Mr. Tanaka came a little while ago.

Word by Word: Tanaka-san (topic) a while ago came.

来ました(きました) is the polite past form of the irregular verb 来る(くる - to come).

  3. もう宿題が終わりました。

    The homework is already finished.

Word by Word: Already homework (subject) finished.

終わりました(おわりました) is the polite past form of the intransitive verb 終わる(おわる - to end/finish).

  4. 朝ご飯を食べませんでした。

    I did not eat breakfast.

Word by Word: Breakfast (object) eat did not.

ませんでした is the polite past negative ending, used here with 食べる(たべる - to eat).

  5. あ、ありました!

Oh, here it is! (I found it!)

    Word by Word: Ah, existed!

The past tense is often used to express the discovery of something you were looking for.

Common Mistakes

  • Using ました with adjectives.

    昨日のテストはむずかしいました。
    昨日のテストはむずかしかったです。

ました is only for verbs. Adjectives have their own past tense rules. For い-adjectives, you change the ending to 〜かったです.

  • Using でした with a dictionary form verb.

    パンを食べるでした。
    パンを食べました。

Learners often try to use でした (the past of です) to make verbs past tense. However, verbs must use the ました ending.

  • Double past tense conjugation.

    行ったました。
    行きました。

You must attach ました to the verb stem (いき), not to the plain past form (いった).
