かった
い-adjective Past
The past tense of い-adjectives is formed by changing the final い to かった. To make it polite, simply add です at the end.
How It Works
In Japanese, い-adjectives function similarly to verbs because they conjugate to show tense. To talk about how something was in the past, you must follow these steps:
1. The Basic Rule:
Remove the final い from the dictionary form and attach かった.
- 安い(やすい / cheap)→ 安かった (was cheap)
- 寒い(さむい / cold)→ 寒かった (was cold)
2. Politeness Levels:
- Casual: Use the 〜かった form alone.
- Polite: Add です after the conjugated form (〜かったです).
3. The Irregular Exception:
The adjective いい (good) is irregular. This is because it is derived from the older form よい. You must use the stem よ before adding the past ending.
- いい → よかった (was good)
- かっこいい → かっこよかった (was cool/good-looking)
4. Negative Past:
To say something 'was not' [adjective], you first change it to the negative form (〜くない), then treat that ない like an い-adjective to make it past: 〜くなかった.
- Polite Negative Past: You can say 〜くなかったです (common) or the more formal 〜くありませんでした.
Examples (4)
- 昨日のテストは難しかったです。
Yesterday's test was difficult.
Word by Word: Yesterday 's test (topic) difficult was.
The adjective 難しい(むずかしい) becomes 難しかった to show the test happened in the past. です makes it polite.
- あの映画は本当によかった!
That movie was really good!
Word by Word: That movie (topic) really good-was!
This uses the irregular past form of いい (good), which is よかった.
- 先週はとても忙しかったです。
I was very busy last week.
Word by Word: Last week (topic) very busy-was.
忙しい(いそがしい) changes to 忙しかった to describe a past state.
- このお菓子は甘かった。
This candy was sweet.
Word by Word: This candy (topic) sweet-was.
A casual sentence where 甘い(あまい) becomes 甘かった without adding です.
Common Mistakes
Using でした directly with an い-adjective.
昨日は暑いでした。昨日は暑かったです。Learners often try to use でした (the past of です) like they do with nouns or な-adjectives. However, い-adjectives must conjugate to 〜かった first. You can add です after かった, but never use でした directly.
Conjugating いい as いかった.
映画はいかったです。映画はよかったです。いい (good) always reverts to its old stem 'よ' for any conjugation. いかった is a common mistake; よかった is the only correct form.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand the past tense of い-adjectives, you need to be familiar with the base form of い-adjectives. This pattern involves a specific morphological change where the final 'い' is replaced with 'かった', so recognizing the 'い' ending is essential.
