なかった

Plain Past Negative

Level 2Sounds Like nakatta

The なかった pattern is the casual past negative form. It is used with verbs, adjectives, and nouns to describe actions that didn't happen or states that didn't exist in the past.

How It Works

1. Verb Conjugation
To form the past negative for verbs, change the verb to its ない form, then replace the final い with かった。

  • Group 1 (Godan): Change the final 'u' sound to 'a' + なかった。 (e.g., 行く(いく) → 行かなかった)
Note: For verbs ending in the vowel う, the う changes to わ (e.g., 買う(かう) → 買わなかった).
  • Group 2 (Ichidan): Drop る + なかった。 (e.g., 食べる(たべる) → 食べなかった)

2. Core Irregulars

  • ある (to exist): Becomes なかった (not あらなかった).
  • いい (good): Becomes よくなかった (not いくなかった).
  • 来る(くる): Becomes こなかった。
  • する: Becomes しなかった。

3. Adjectives and Nouns

4. Usage and Register
This is the plain/casual form. Adding です to the end (〜なかったです) is common for adjectives in polite speech. However, for verbs, 〜なかったです is considered slightly less formal/colloquial compared to the standard ませんでした。

Examples (6)

  1. 昨日はどこにも行かなかった。

    I didn't go anywhere yesterday.

Word by Word: Yesterday (topic) anywhere to go-not-past.

The verb 行く(いく) is changed to its negative past form 行かなかった to show the action did not happen in the past.

  2. テストはあまり難しくなかった。

    The test wasn't very difficult.

Word by Word: Test (topic) not very difficult-not-past.

The い-adjective 難しい(むずかしい) drops the final い and adds くなかった to express 'was not difficult'.

  3. 昨日のパーティーは静かじゃなかった。

    Yesterday's party wasn't quiet.

Word by Word: Yesterday's party (topic) quiet was-not-past.

For な-adjectives like 静か(しずか), the past negative is formed using じゃなかった.

  4. 犯人は彼じゃなかった。

    The criminal wasn't him.

Word by Word: Criminal (topic) he was-not-past.

For nouns, the casual past negative is じゃなかった.

  5. 昨日はお金がなかった。

    I had no money yesterday.

Word by Word: Yesterday (topic) money (subject) exist-not-past.

The verb ある is irregular in the negative; it becomes なかった directly.

  6. その映画はあまりよくなかった。

    That movie wasn't very good.

Word by Word: That movie (topic) not very good-not-past.

The adjective いい (good) is irregular and changes its stem to よ before adding くなかった.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 「ない だった」 instead of 「なかった」.

    昨日は行かないだった。
    昨日は行かなかった。

Learners often try to add the past copula だった to the negative form. However, because the negative ending ない behaves like an い-adjective, it must use the かった ending for the past tense.

  • Mispronouncing the past negative of 来る(くる).

    友達はきなかった。
    友達はこなかった。

The verb 来る(くる) is irregular. Its negative stem is こ, so the past negative is こなかった, not きなかった.

  • Using なかった for 'have not yet'.

    まだ宿題をしなかった。
    まだ宿題をしていない。

なかった is used for a completed point in the past (did not). To say you 'have not yet' done something, you must use まだ〜ていない.

Learn This First

To understand 'なかった' (the plain past negative), you first need to know how to form the plain negative ('ない' form) of verbs. Since 'ない' conjugates exactly like an 'い-adjective', knowing how to turn 'い' into 'かった' for the past tense is the final step in creating this form.
