Using Prepositions With Clauses: að
Prepositions Before Að-Clauses
Ég hlakka til þess að sjá þig. (I look forward to seeing you.) Hún er vön því að vinna mikið. (She is used to working a lot.)
How It Works
The pattern. preposition + það in the right case + að + clause or infinitive:
- til þess að (til + genitive): Ég hlakka til þess að sjá þig.
- um það að (um + accusative): Við töluðum um það að flytja til Akureyrar.
- á því að (á + dative): Hún hefur áhuga á því að læra á píanó.
- við því að (við + dative): Ég bjóst ekki við því að hann kæmi.
- eftir því að (eftir + dative): Við bíðum eftir því að rigningin hætti.
Adjectives and verbs that govern a case. The same thing happens when a word takes a case without a preposition: Hún er vön því að vinna mikið (vanur + dative). Ég sakna þess að búa í sveitinni (sakna + genitive). See það að.
When the pronoun is left out. In many common phrases, especially before an infinitive, speakers drop the pronoun, and this is normal, correct Icelandic: Ég hlakka til að sjá þig. Hún er vön að vinna mikið. Ég er viss um að hann kemur. The full form is a little more careful and is always correct. See hlakka til and vera vanur að.
When it must stay. A few combinations are fixed and never drop the pronoun:
- án þess að (without): Hann fór án þess að kveðja.
- frá því að (since): Ég hef búið hér frá því að ég var barn.
- með því að (by doing): Hún lærði íslensku með því að tala við fólk.
Other phrases with með can drop the pronoun: Ég á erfitt með að sofa. (I have trouble sleeping.) Only the meaning by doing always needs með því að.
Watch the meaning. eftir að without a pronoun is the conjunction after: eftir að ég kom heim (after I came home). eftir því að belongs with bíða eftir (wait for). In the same way, when no word before it calls for til, til að means in order to: Ég fór út til að kaupa mjólk.
Examples (6)
- Ég hlakka til þess að sjá þig.
I look forward to seeing you.
Word by Word: I look-forward to it(gen) to see you.
til takes the genitive, so það becomes þess. Ég hlakka til að sjá þig is just as correct.
- Hún er vön því að vinna mikið.
She is used to working a lot.
Word by Word: She is used to-it(dat) to work much.
vanur takes the dative: því.
- Ég bjóst ekki við því að hann kæmi.
I did not expect him to come.
Word by Word: I expected not with it(dat) that he came(subj).
búast við takes the dative, so the pronoun is því.
- Hún lærði íslensku með því að tala við fólk.
She learned Icelandic by talking to people.
Word by Word: She learned Icelandic with it(dat) to talk with people.
með því að means by doing and always keeps því.
- Hann fór án þess að kveðja.
He left without saying goodbye.
Word by Word: He went without it(gen) to say-goodbye.
- Ég hef búið hér frá því að ég var barn.
I have lived here since I was a child.
Word by Word: I have lived here from it(dat) that I was child.
frá því að means since and always keeps því.
Common Mistakes
Putting the pronoun in the wrong case.
Ég hlakka til það að sjá þig.Ég hlakka til þess að sjá þig.til takes the genitive, so the pronoun must be þess. If you are unsure of the case here, you can leave the pronoun out: Ég hlakka til að sjá þig.
Leaving out þess after án.
Hann fór án að kveðja.Hann fór án þess að kveðja.án þess að is a fixed combination. án cannot stand directly before að.
Leaving out því in since.
Ég hef búið hér frá að ég var barn.Ég hef búið hér frá því að ég var barn.To say since, the fixed form is frá því að.
