án þess að

Without Doing (Án Þess Að)

Level 3

án þess að means without doing: Hann fór án þess að kveðja (He left without saying goodbye).

How It Works

Same subject: infinitive.

  • Hann fór án þess að kveðja. (He left without saying goodbye.)
  • Hann tók bílinn án þess að spyrja. (He took the car without asking.)

Different subject: subjunctive clause. What did not happen is not a fact, so the verb is normally in the present subjunctive or past subjunctive:

  • Hún fór út án þess að ég vissi það. (She went out without me knowing.)
  • Kötturinn slapp út án þess að nokkur tæki eftir því. (The cat got out without anyone noticing.)

No second negative. án þess að already means without, so do not add ekki. For any, use a form of neinn or nokkur: Hann fór án þess að segja neitt (He left without saying anything), án þess að nokkur tæki eftir því (without anyone noticing). See nokkur/neinn.

Instead of: í stað þess að. Built the same way: Í stað þess að kvarta ættum við að hjálpa (Instead of complaining, we should help). Ég gekk heim í stað þess að taka strætó (I walked home instead of taking the bus). In everyday speech you will also hear í staðinn fyrir að.

Word order. When the phrase comes first, the main clause starts with its verb (verb-second word order): Í stað þess að kvarta ættum við að hjálpa.

Examples (6)

  1. Hann fór án þess að kveðja.

    He left without saying goodbye.

Word by Word: He went without that to say-goodbye.

  2. Hún fór út án þess að ég vissi það.

She went out without me knowing.

Word by Word: She went out without that I knew (subj.) it.

vissi is the past subjunctive of vita; it looks the same as the past indicative.

  3. Ekki fara út án þess að læsa hurðinni.

Don't go out without locking the door.

Word by Word: Not go out without that to lock the door.

    læsa takes the dative: hurðinni.

  4. Kötturinn slapp út án þess að nokkur tæki eftir því.

The cat got out without anyone noticing.

Word by Word: The cat escaped out without that anyone took (subj.) after it.

tæki is the past subjunctive of taka; the indicative is tók.

  5. Í stað þess að kvarta ættum við að hjálpa.

Instead of complaining, we should help.

Word by Word: In place of that to complain should we to help.

  6. Ég gekk heim í stað þess að taka strætó.

I walked home instead of taking the bus.

Word by Word: I walked home in place of that to take bus.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out þess.

    Hann fór án að kveðja.
Hann fór án þess að kveðja.

án cannot take að directly. Put þess in between: án þess að.

  • Adding a second negative.

Hann fór án þess að segja ekki neitt.
Hann fór án þess að segja neitt.

án þess að is already negative. Leave out ekki and use neitt for anything.

  • Using the indicative for what did not happen.

Kötturinn slapp út án þess að nokkur tók eftir því.
Kötturinn slapp út án þess að nokkur tæki eftir því.

Nobody noticed, so the clause is not a fact. Use the past subjunctive tæki, not the indicative tók.
