The Placeholder það
A placeholder það fills first place and disappears when something else takes it: Það er kalt úti → Úti er kalt.
How It Works
A word that only holds a place. In these sentences það does not mean it or that:
- Weather and conditions: Það er kalt úti. (weather)
- Someone or something new: Það komu margir gestir. (Many guests came.)
- What people do: Það var dansað alla nóttina. (People danced all night; see impersonal passive.)
It disappears. Put anything else first and það is no longer needed:
- Það er kalt úti → Úti er kalt.
- Það komu margir gestir → Í gær komu margir gestir.
- Það var dansað alla nóttina → Alla nóttina var dansað.
In a yes/no question the verb comes first, so there is no það: Er kalt úti? Komu margir gestir?
Compare the real pronoun. When það refers to something, it is a real subject and stays: Hvar er hjólið? Það er úti. (Where is the bike? It's outside.) With something else first, it is still there: Í gær var það úti. (Yesterday it was outside.)
Agreement. The verb agrees with the real subject that comes later: Það kom einn gestur but Það komu margir gestir.
After að in a clause, the placeholder usually stays: Ég held að það sé kalt úti.

Common Mistakes
Keeping the placeholder when something else is already first.
Í gær komu það margir gestir.Í gær komu margir gestir.í gær fills first place, so the empty það is not needed.
Making the verb agree with það instead of the real subject.
Það kom margir gestir.Það komu margir gestir. The real subject is margir gestir, which is plural, so the verb is komu.
Leaving out það at the start of a statement.
Er kalt úti.Það er kalt úti.A sentence that starts with the verb is read as a question: Er kalt úti? For a statement, start with það or another word.
