Because: rupi, gui and rehe

Level 4

Rupi, -gui and -rehe can mean “because of”. They usually show place, and the reason is their extra job.

How It Works

Three words that usually show place can also show a reason.

WordUsual meaningAs a reason
rupiaround, throughbecause of, thanks to
-guifrombecause of
-rehe, -reat, aboutfor, because of

Put the reason first and the small word after it: Che ru rupi che aikove “I live because of my father”. The reason can also be a whole clause: Che jarýi oĩgui ko távape… “Because my grandmother is in this town…”.

Thanks work the same way: Aguyje peẽme cherenduhaguére “Thank you for listening to me”. Here -hague makes each verb a noun for something that already happened, and -re gives the reason for the thanks.

In everyday talk many people say porque instead. The endings in this lesson are the Guarani way to give a reason.

Examples (4)

  1. Che ru rupi che aikove.

I live because of my father.

Rupi follows che ru “my father” and gives the reason I live.

  2. Aguyje peẽme cherenduhaguére ha chepytyvõhaguére.

Thank you for listening to me and for helping me.

The ending -re gives the reason for the thanks: you listened, and you helped.

  3. Che jarýi oĩgui ko távape, aiko ápe.

Because my grandmother is in this town, I live here.

The ending -gui after oĩ “is” gives the reason in the first clause.

  4. Che ru almacénpe chedeprovechovégui.

Because I am more useful in the grocery store of my father.

Chedeprovechove is “I am more useful”, and -gui gives the reason. The stress stays on -ve, so it shows as é.
