porque / pórke
Because: Porque
Ndaikatúi aha porque che sy hasy “I cannot go because my mother is sick”.
How It Works
There are two ways to give a reason.
| Way | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| porque or pórke, then the reason | Ndaikatúi aha porque che sy hasy. | I cannot go because my mother is sick. |
| an ending on the reason | Che sy hasy rupi, ndaikatúi aha. | Because my mother is sick, I cannot go. |
Porque is a Spanish word, so it is part of Jopara, the everyday mix of Guarani and Spanish. It is most common in speech. The endings -rupi, -gui and -rehe are the Guarani way to give a reason.
Porque is only for “because”. To ask “why?”, use mbaʼerã or mbaʼére.

My father has not left me, because I always do everything he wants.
Porque starts the reason, and the reason is a full sentence.
- Ndaikatúi aha porque che sy hasy.

Porque comes first, and the reason follows.
- Che sy hasy rupi, ndaikatúi aha.
