ვჭამ means I eat and ვსვამ means I drink.

How It Works

The food or drink takes -ს: ნინო ხაჭაპურს ჭამს (Nino is eating khachapuri). A word that ends in -ა or -ო adds -ს: ყავა, ყავას; ღვინო, ღვინოს.

To ask what someone is eating, use რას: რას ჭამ? (What are you eating?)

In the future and the past, drink uses a different verb. You will learn both forms at Level 3.

With a plural object, the verb stays the same: ვაშლებს ვჭამ (I'm eating apples).

  1. პურს ვჭამ.

    I'm eating bread.

    პური becomes პურს.

  2. ჩაის ვსვამ.

    I'm drinking tea.

    ჩაი adds -ს.

  3. ბავშვები ნაყინს ჭამენ.

    The children are eating ice cream.

    ჭამენ: they eat.

  4. ნინო ყავას არ სვამს.

    Nino doesn't drink coffee.

    არ before the verb.

  5. სუფრაზე ღვინოს ვსვამთ.

    We drink wine at the feast.

    ღვინო adds -ს.

  • Leaving the food in the nominative.

    პურს ვჭამ.
