-ის შემდეგ
After
After a genitive, შემდეგ means after or later.
How It Works
| Georgian | English |
|---|---|
| გაკვეთილის შემდეგ | after the lesson |
| სამსახურის შემდეგ | after work |
| ვახშმის შემდეგ | after dinner |
| ერთი საათის შემდეგ | in an hour |
| ორი დღის შემდეგ | two days later, in two days |
In everyday speech you will also hear მერე in the same place: გაკვეთილის მერე (after class).
Word order matters here. შემდეგ before a noun means next: შემდეგ გაკვეთილზე (at the next lesson).
The opposite is წინ: გაკვეთილის წინ (before the lesson).
Like წინ, შემდეგ follows the genitive rules: ვახშამი loses a vowel and gives ვახშმის შემდეგ.
For the next day, Georgians say მეორე დღეს (on the second day).
