-ოსანი
One Who Has or Wears
-ოსანი makes a word for someone who has or wears something: ჩოხოსანი (a man in a chokha), ვეფხისტყაოსანი (the one in the panther's skin).
How It Works
-ოსანი (-osani) makes a word for someone who has, wears or works with something:
| Noun | With -ოსანი | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ჩოხა (chokha, the long coat) | ჩოხოსანი | someone who wears a chokha |
| წვერი (beard) | წვეროსანი | a bearded man |
| გვირგვინი (crown) | გვირგვინოსანი | crowned, a monarch |
| ოსკარი (an Oscar) | ოსკაროსანი | an Oscar winner |
| ხელი (hand) | ხელოსანი | a craftsman |
The most famous example is the title of Shota Rustaveli's poem, ვეფხისტყაოსანი, the one in the panther's skin. It joins ვეფხი, an old word for a tiger or panther (today ვეფხვი), to ტყავი (skin), and -ოსანი makes it the one who wears a panther's skin.
Many of these words are old and fixed, but the ending still makes new ones: ოსკაროსანი is a newspaper word for an Oscar winner.
For the everyday with or wearing, use -იანი (Level 4): ქუდიანი კაცი (a man in a hat). -ოსანი sounds more solemn, or names a type of person.
