მე-5 (Ordinals in Digits)
Numbers in Writing
Write an ordinal in digits as მე- with a hyphen and the number: მე-5 (fifth); first is 1-ლი, and centuries often use Roman numerals.
How It Works
At Level 2 you learned ordinals as words: მეორე, მესამე, მეხუთე. In writing with digits, keep მე-, add a hyphen and write the number:
| Written | Read aloud | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| მე-2 | მეორე | second |
| მე-5 | მეხუთე | fifth |
| მე-20 | მეოცე | twentieth |
| 1-ლი | პირველი | first |
First is the exception, because პირველი has no მე-: its last letters go after the number, 1-ლი.
The noun after the ordinal takes the case ending, and the written ordinal stays as it is: მე-5 კლასში (in fifth grade), მე-3 სართულზე (on the third floor).
Centuries are often written in Roman numerals: XXI საუკუნე (the twenty-first century), XII საუკუნის ეკლესია (a 12th-century church). You will also see მე-12 საუკუნე. Either way, read it as an ordinal: მეთორმეტე საუკუნე.
