მე-...-ე (Ordinal Numbers)
First, Second, Third
Put მე- before a number and -ე after it to say second, third and so on; first is პირველი.
How It Works
| Number | Ordinal |
|---|---|
| ერთი (one) | პირველი (first) |
| ორი (two) | მეორე (second) |
| სამი (three) | მესამე (third) |
| ოთხი (four) | მეოთხე (fourth) |
| ხუთი (five) | მეხუთე (fifth) |
| რვა (eight) | მერვე (eighth) |
| ათი (ten) | მეათე (tenth) |
| ოცი (twenty) | მეოცე (twentieth) |
The pattern is მე-, then the number without its final vowel, then -ე. So ხუთი loses -ი and becomes მეხუთე, and რვა loses -ა and becomes მერვე.
First is different. On its own it is not built from ერთი (one): it is პირველი (p'irveli). Only at the end of a long number does one become -მეერთე: ოცდამეერთე (twenty-first).
Ordinals go before the noun like any describing word: მესამე სართული (the third floor), მეორე კლასი (second grade).
