kial / tial
Why and for That Reason
Kial asks for a reason, and tial leads to a result.
How It Works
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| kial | why | Kial vi ridas? |
| tial | for that reason | Mi estas malsana, tial mi restas hejme. |
The answer to kial usually starts with ĉar (because): Mi ridas, ĉar la filmo estas tre amuza.
Tial and ĉar tell the same story from two ends. Mi estas malsana, tial mi restas hejme gives the reason first and the result second. Mi restas hejme, ĉar mi estas malsana gives the result first and the reason second. Tial goes with the result, and ĉar goes with the reason.
Neither kial nor tial is an adjective, so they never take -j or -n.

Common Mistakes
Using tial for the reason.
