Questions Without ĉu
Put the question word first, with no ĉu.
How It Works
| Question | It asks for |
|---|---|
| Kie vi loĝas? | a place |
| Kiam li venos? | a time |
| Kion ŝi legas? | a thing |
| Kun kiu vi parolas? | a person to talk with |
| Pri kio vi pensas? | a subject of thought |
Yes-or-no questions start with ĉu. Questions that look for information start with a question word, and the two do not go together: Kie vi loĝas? needs no ĉu.
A small word like kun, pri, per or al stands before the question word, not at the end of the sentence: Per kio vi veturas?
The answer gives the missing piece: Kie vi loĝas? Mi loĝas en Brazilo.
Examples (5)
- Kiam li venos, Kenji?
When will he come, Kenji?
The question word starts the question.
- Kion ŝi legas?
What is she reading?
Kion has -n because it is the object of legas.
- Kun kiu vi parolas, Mei?
Who are you talking with, Mei?
Kun stands before kiu.
- Pri kio vi pensas, Ahmed?
What are you thinking about, Ahmed?
Pri stands before kio.
- Per kio vi veturas al la kongreso?
How do you travel to the congress?
Per kio asks what you use to travel.
Common Mistakes
Adding ĉu to a question word.
Ĉu kie vi loĝas?Kie vi loĝas?A question word already asks the question. Ĉu is for yes-or-no questions.
Leaving the small word at the end.
Kiu vi parolas kun?Kun kiu vi parolas?A word like kun always stands in front of the word it goes with, so it cannot be left at the end.
